Felfoldi’s Wine Rating Scale — AKA the “Death to Chardonnay and Merlot” Scale

After several years of learning wines, and even receiving as a gift a great wine tasting kit to hone my skills, I believe I’m ready to create my own wine scale. Please note: this is not the scale of a wine connoisseur. It is, rather, a scale of my personal likes and dislikes. In general, I ‘m tired of merlot when a shiraz or malbec is available. I dislike chardonnay — I don’t want “buttery” and “oaky” flavors in my wine. I like my whites airy and not too sweet. I like my reds bold.

“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”

Ernest Hemingway – Death in the Afternoon
